Module 4 - Info Professions - Evolution and Impacts of Info Tech Information Science 101 Chapter 2 Professional Identities and Opportunities (Debons) This article introduced me to the study, interests, and work of information scientists. It was very interesting and Debons did a great job explaining some of the common properties that jobs in information science have. Ch 13 Information Professions (Davis-Shaw) The short passage from Davis and Shaw began with an overview of the memory institutions; Libraries, Museums, and Archives. It ended with connections to computer science and values of information science. This text is a great resource for memory institution material. What future jobs look like? (McAfee)(TED) In this TED talk from 2013 Andrew McAfee made a few bold predictions. He said in the near future we will see more science fiction and less humans doing jobs. More and more technology and fewer and fewer jobs. “The new machine age” is good economic news. I found this video very interesting. It was enlightening to hear all the economic statistics and projections for the future machine age. There is no shortage of dystopian visions. I really liked that statement he made. The comparisons between “Ted” and “Bill” were also very fascinating. It makes me glad I am pursuing a college degree and pursuing an information science degree specifically. Competencies for information professionals (SLA) This website is dedicated to connecting information professionals. I think it is so awesome that there is a community like this for information professionals. This specific webpage lists the core competencies for information professionals; Information and Knowledge Services, Information and Knowledge Systems and Technology, Information and Knowledge Resources, Information and Data Retrieval and Analysis, Organization of Data, Information, and Knowledge Assets, and Information Ethics. This website is a great source to learn more about the core competencies for information professionals. Possible IST Career Path (University of Wisconsin Milwaukee) Something interesting I learned from this website is that I can join an email list for IST and MLIS job postings sent directly to me. This website is also very useful in researching possible career paths for information scientists. Under each possible career path the website lists responsibilities, the type of work you would be doing, and the average salary. Image of the Future Information Society (Masuda) I learned a lot about the future information society. Masuda describes the future information society, a future human society who’s driving force is their information values and not their material values. Mauda uses a table to predict the future information society. It was a prediction or an educated guess but it was very insightful for its time in 1990. I would like to hear what Masuda would say now and about future information societies. Fundamentals of Information Studies: Understanding Information and its Environment (Lester) This article discussed the information environment that we live in today. It is very accessible and answers the questions as to why institutions are creating accessible information to public use. They lead the world in creating, altering, and distributing the information. We are able to become the institutions themselves and also create, retrieve, alter, and distribute information as we see fit which levels out the playing field for everyone everywhere.
